Nah, only if they fall over on their own.

12 - 18" wide at the base works well for me.

So far, the standing dead ones are still providing all I need.

As they should for a good long while. How much land do you have? My dad has 40 acres, and the only time he needs to cut down a tree is it he's making a road or something, Deadwood for fires is easy to come by.
