BTW, chances are that none of us know what we have...

CDC said:
Influenza usually starts suddenly and may include the following symptoms:

* Fever (usually high)
* Headache
* Tiredness (can be extreme)
* Cough
* Sore throat
* Runny or stuffy nose
* Body aches
* Diarrhea and vomiting (more common among children than adults)

Having these symptoms does not always mean that you have the flu. Many different illnesses, including the common cold, can have similar symptoms.
Diagnosing the Flu

It is very difficult to distinguish the flu from other infections on the basis of symptoms alone. A doctor's exam may be needed to tell whether you have developed the flu or a complication of the flu. There are tests that can determine if you have the flu as long you are tested within the first 2 or 3 days of illness.

I think what most of you people are talking about is what we've always called the 24 hour flu, you throw up, have diarrhea, feel like crap, don't go anywhere, for 24 hours, then as suddenly as it hits, it seems to be gone. This is not what we get vaccinated against, nor what people are talking about when they talk about the flu on medical studies and such, it is much worse, lasts days, and can cause problems. Now I personally have never had it, so I don't know how bad or what exactly, but I have had the "24 hour flu" at least once a year.

Also, I don't get flu vaccines, nor have I vaccinated my kids against it. They do have all the other ones though.

When I got the flu. My the taste of some food items changed permanently. For example, I hated mushrooms, but after the flu I loved them and think they are delicious.

That's from brain damage, likely caused by a high fever for an extended period of time.

what about when your sister throws up canned mushrooms on you and affects you for life?

What is that? Trauma?

She also threw up on me in car, very close proximity, on the way back from Six Flags
