Recently my outlook has gone funny on me (outlook 2003). The application will crash completely anytime I open an item into it's own window...be it double clicking an email, opening the details of a calendar appointment, a contact's information, etc. Everything is fine in the program otherwise, as long as I don't open anything fully. I can browse emails with the preview pane no problem. Also, If I am running Outlook in safe mode everything works just fine, things open up with no problem.

The crash is: MS Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Then it wants to send an error report to Microsoft and restart Outlook. You know the window, blah. Worst error code ever.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2003, I've tried the repair function which is really a joke anyways, I have repaired the .pst file, I have all the latest updates and service packs applied.

I'm at a loss here guys, anybody out there have any idea what might be causing these crashes? I really don't want to have to go on using Outlook in safe mode forever.

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have to offer.

that ended in outlook 03...the file size limit is now 20gb since then

that wouldn't explain safe mode still working

but it does happen if the pst was not created in 03 but in 2000 or xp version and transfered over.

Ohh might be an issue with his addons!
Erage are you using this as a personal mailbox i.e. no exchange server or internal to the company?

I have a tech request as well.

I can no longer downloads files in Firefox. When I click file links on web pages I get the window asking where to save the file and what to call it, but when I click the save button nothing happens and I can't locate the item. It is EXTREMELY annoying to use Firefox to browse and IE to download things.

Firefox is up to date and I don't think I have any add-ons.

uninstalll firefox and delete the profile under docs and settings\your user name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox

make sure to export your bookmarks first. then reinstall.

go to tools->downloads and see if anything shows up in there...you can also specify where things dl to at the bottom of that window

try a new normal.dot file...might be corrupt

I'll use this method: http://www.elamb.org/howto/normal-dot.htm

This sounds possible because I have gotten messages during restarts that indicate a problem with the normal.dot file.

or it could be that his pst file has exceeded 2 gigs. outlook does not like large pst files.

The outlook.pst is <500MB

but it does happen if the pst was not created in 03 but in 2000 or xp version and transfered over.

I have tried disabling addons to no avail. This is a personal mailbox, no linkage to any exchange servers. POP mail account.

no luck, renaming normal.dot and forcing word to create a new one does not fix the problem. :(

Also, the crash does not just happen when opening received emails, it happens in calander items and contacts as well when detail windows are viewed.

are you sure you got the right normal.dot file? also, are you using word as you email editor in outlook? if so, turn it off and see if things improve

I searched all files / folders hidden included and renamed all of them oldNormal.dot

Then just let word build a new one. But really the only one was under application data/microsoft/...

I tried changing word as the default editor and no luck there either :( This is annoying. I did a full uninstall and reinstall of office but no help there.

If it works in safe mode, it HAS to be an add-in. Short of recreating your entire profile, rename the Outlook folders in C:\docs&sets\fag\appdata and C:\docs&sets\fag\localsets\appdata

detect and repair fucntion didn't work?

This is your problem right here. You need to be using Outlook Express. It is meant for non-enterprise email. It's waaaay better than Outlook. :hay:

Wish I could use something else, but no choice. It's what we are allowed to use, and I have to be able to send and receive contacts and calender items. :iono:

I unchecked the crap in the add-in manager. I'll try renaming these folders...and if my username is fag, take a guess what my password is :hi2u:
