Halloween Plans

what's lame is that trick-or-treating has been scaled down tremendously by all this church/mall/park crap. do you knmow that a lot of churches get the members to park their cars in the parking lot, pop the trunks, and they have trick-or-treating from the trunks? what the hell fun is that?

Yea, it's very stupid and I refuse to participate. Also, at even the ones in our small town they tell you to plan on hundreds of pieces of candy. I don't want to have to buy that much or have my child get that much candy.

and where's the fun? isn't part of it walking down the streets at night, going door to door, passing goblins and ballerinas under the street lights? halloween's disappearing. :(

You can thank all the crazy pervs for that one. There is no way I'll let my daughter go out by herself in Tampa.
I'll bet there are the same number of pervs out there today as when we were kids. You just hear about it more.

Would you trust candy from you?
Why did parents trust candy 20 years ago?

Let's be honest here. Trick or treating is about parents dressing their kids up so they look cute. That is the only real way that kids get involved with it at such a young age. If they were to never take part until they were older and decided to go on their own, they'd realize it's not that fun. As it is, they have it instilled in them to think it is fun.

Halloween was so much fun where I grew up. My neighborhood was quiet and safe. All the dad's would take the kids out while the mom's stayed home to pass out candy. The moms were also required to have beer on hand so that if the dad that came to the door had an empty it was replaced by a new one. We never worried about psychos or crazies. I'm sad that it seems the world isn't this way anymore.

edit: We also had a neighborhood parade and a costume contest. It really was fun for the kids. I loved getting dressed up, running around with all the kids in the area (there were about 50 in our neighborhood), and getting to eat candy.

you lived in my neighborhood.

I've never been trick or treating
Looking back on my experiences, you didn't really miss that much. The most fun part was actually designing the costume. The candy part was okay, but it's not like I'd never had candy before or couldn't get it the rest of the year.

it wasn't about the candy for me. i don't remember the candy (well, maybe the wax lips and peanut butter logs.) it was about the experience of it. and being out at night. and passing all the costumes, some of which you kept your head down for because they were scary. and knocking at the door with anxiousness as you didn't know who or what was going to open the door. and walking up the next set of stairs, daring that thing sitting on the porch swing to talk or not...is it real?
man, i'd go back and do it all over again.

I got invited to a halloween party, not entirely sure I'm going to go. Probably just stay home and play some Battlefield.

Church people lack fundamental parts of their brains anyway, so this really doesn't surprise me.

Eh back when I was a kid and my parents forced me to go to Church our had a really cool system. They got people to donate prizes / candy and you had to purchase tickets. The tickets were used to compete in various games. Some were simple, like throwing darts...except from really really far away. Others were even more simple, like tossing a mason jar ring and getting it on the top of a rack of glass bottles. In the end you had lots of candy and usually atleast one or two cool prizes.

Then all the money went to the local shelter which they in turn used to fund whatever projects they needed to work on.

The local animal preserve has a Halloween function every year for the kids on the weekend before Halloween. You walking the kids along the lighted paths at night to each animals location and there is a person there dressed up like the animal and they give the kids candy after talking about the animal. Actually is not bad. Plus there is games and various activites. I'll take my son to that Saturday night.

Halloween night my wife was trying to talk me into going to some friends of hers house to hang out with them and their kids. We would take all the kids trick or treating in that neighborhood becuase it's super safe and lots of houses will give out candy. I'm not big on the guy so I'm trying to kill that idea and just have people over to our house. Drink and watch scary movies and hand out candy. We can still take my son around our neighborhood.
