Ontopic String's and Adi's gear & pedal thread

Installed a new nut. Got mine pre slotted and it looks to be a good fit. I still need to file down where it's hanging off ( I knew those files would come in handy) and I had to sand the width to get it in the slot. I'm not going to glue it.

This bass is going to be very decent when I get done fixing it up.

Add a zero fret and I'll really be impressed.

I once thought of trying to make one out of a piece of polished marble, like a scrap piece from making a countertop, as a sort of match for a pearloid pick guard. Never attempted it.
Might still try someday.

I thought the benefit of using a zero fret was all about setup and no need to use the nut for string height, making the nut only a spacing thang. The zero fret isn’t a sound thing.

I’m likely incorrect because, well, you know.

I've heard both stories.
One says it's for set up.

The other is so open strings and fretted sound the same.
But honestly, live, in the middle of a song ... On bass ... Who has that kind of ear?

Yeah, this is the first time I’ve ever heard the sound argument. That was usually reserved for brass nut discussion.

So I thought. I don’t trust my memory, or thinking anymore for that matter.

The height thing is nice for people who change string gauges a lot - the strings are always at the same height. Sonically I think a brass nut that is taken down as low as possible without the open string clanging the first fret sounds virtually the same. Hey, let's talk the Buzz Feiten system.

I used a tusq nut. It's man mad ivory. It feels and files like bone. Very cool. It seems to sound more mellow than bone which is cool because I think it evens out the tone of open notes.

I must have had some glue left over in the nut slot cause my G string was much lower than the rest. I simply folded a piece of paper a couple of times cut it to size and slipped it under the nut. Paper works good cause it's basically wood and it's thin enough to be precise with the height.
