Advice The Home Improvement/Automation Thread

Ok, I need to turn this into a gate in order to bring the boats into the backyard.

Anyone have any thoughts on how? I'm thinking that I will diagonally brace the panel so it can be hinged, then add hinges and a latch. Anything else?

There is a panel in the backyard that looks like it was there before this one. Thought about doing what you described with it instead of chain link. I don't really want anyone to be able to see in.

Also, its a national property as the owner. They won't allow it if I ask.

What about opaque plastic pickets threaded through the chain link?

edit: I'm stuck on chain link because it's light as fuck, and you really don't want to be swinging a huge amount of weight without a proper post.

If that post is cemented in, then pull off the pickets and the rails in one unit (so you can put it back up later) and put up a lightweight chain-link gate.

Anything above and beyond that, I'd be looking for dispensation from the landlord for.

tsrh
Plus the landlord may get pissed you fuckin with his fence

Maybe. I'm not sure how much they check up on their properties.
Buying a bag of cement is fairly cheap, though.

It's a national company. They might not give back all of the deposit, but I don't know that they can get pissed.
At the same time, we've had standing water in the master bath's shower for a week and they've only sent out a handyman, not a plumber

Chain link fence on a rural residential property is acceptable.

And thank fuck I don't live somewhere there's a HOA.

For here, I'd do a double door gate that latches in the middle. Puts less load on the posts.

Dig a hole in the center of the gate, fill it with concrete and either drill a hole in it or cast a metal pipe into it that's flush with the top surface. Have a rod on one of the doors that drops down into the hole in the concrete, to anchor the center of the door.

In that pic, the leftmost post is able to be wiggled around. Definitely not strong enough (right now at least) to hold a gate.
