My kid has an Apple iTouch 4. Does anyone know if it is possible to force iOS 8 on it?

Without too much unnecessary details, there are some apps and features we'd like to put on there that aren't available because the latest iOS for the iPod Touch 4 is 6.1.6. I know you can hack the iPhone/iTouch by "jailbreaking" it, but I've never attempted it before.

So ..
1) Is it possible to get iOS 8 on that device?
2) Even if I can, will it make it unstable?
3) Does anyone know how to jailbreak?

... and I'm asking if you really know how, cause I can look up directions on the internet. I've done that and I'm getting errors, so I'm looking for someone who might actually know what the f*ck I'm doing wrong

Thanks

I think you need to get root capability, not jailbreak it.
I looked into jailbreaking an iphone 5S (or something) and everything I found about jailbreaking was allowing it to talk on other networks.
Doesn't help much, but it might help your google-fu

I did successfully jailbreak it last night - figured out that the error messages were caused by my iTunes being too up-to-date ... once I downgraded it, I was able to work through the issues, though there were a few scary moments were I thought I bricked it.

But now that its jailbroken and has Cydia installed, I agree that it might not be what I need. I've got access to all kinds of cool stuff, but I don't think I can actually force iOS 8 on it - just hacks that make it look like it is running iOS 8. Which doesn't solve the issue of the apps I want to get on there that are not compatible with iOS 6.

Need more research now . . .

Maybe we can help in another way. Why do you need iOS 8? I assume its a parental thing, so maybe someone could suggest another option...

We are going on a cruise in March aboard one of Carnival's ships that has on-board wifi. For $5 per device, you can add an app that allows texting on the ship so that we can stay in contact with the kids - especially useful now that they are a bit older and have more freedom, but the app requires iOS 8.

Also, family sharing, which allows me to approve any iTunes purchases and gives him access to stuff I already purchased, requires iOS 7 or greater.

And he's always bitching about games and stuff that aren't available on his device.

why not just buy a 10 dollar android phone and be done with it, at least on the txting front.
It's not texting he needs, it's access to Carnival's app. He has messaging on the iTouch, works great if you are on full wifi, but full wifi on the ship is $60/device, and we'd all need it to communicate through iMessage. Whereas the $5 app is perfect for our needs, if I could get it on his device

Yes, it is available on Andriod "4.0 and up" - I don't know what that means since I don't own any Android devices.

I really don't want to go down the road of buying another device just for him to use on the ship, or if you can get a 4.0 Android any cheaper than an iTouch 5

not trying to bash apple, just trying to minimize your work here.

Yeah, that one would be wifi only.

prepaid cell that doesnt expire, unlike europe, is very rare here. I only know one provider that used to do it (lycamobile), and they dont anymore.

I have a need for that as well, for "internet of things" devices, where i want the device to be able to call out once a month or when it moves, or something, without topping it up.

Damn. We've been looking for something for my daughter just as an 'emergency phone.' She has my wife's old iPhone 4 set up as wifi only. She can message and facetime us when she's on wifi, but it would be nice for her to be able to contact us in an emergency if she's not on wifi.

I've considered a mobile hot spot as an alternative, if I could find the right plan
