Thread Shell profits jump 77% on higher oil prices

I always love the way people blame corporations as if they are entities all of thir own. The profits are what drives ordinary people's pension funds in the main. We want companies to not make large profits yet we want our pensions inflation proofed. I wonder what % return these exorbitant profits are on investment.

Just checked. This $8 billion profit is on a capital investment of over $322 billion. If this quarter were consisttent then it would be a pre-tax return of 10%. Hardly something to get worked up about if a freak result only shows 10% pa.

everyone with a 401k is part of the big lobbying companies in DC who are simply trying to maximize their profits for their stockholders and care about nothing else at all. it's truly a fucked system.

Old but good

An American tourist was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked.
Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The tourist complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.
The Mexican replied, "Only a little while."
The tourist then asked, "Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?"
The Mexican said, "With this I have more than enough to support my family's needs."
The tourist then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"
The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life."
The tourist scoffed, " I can help you. You should spend more time fishing; and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat: With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor; eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You could leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles and eventually New York where you could run your ever-expanding enterprise."
The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?"
The tourist replied, "15 to 20 years."
"But what then?" asked the Mexican.
The tourist laughed and said, "That's the best part. When the time is right you would sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions."
"Millions?...Then what?"
The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."

heh.. you're on a roll today.

on a roll? yeah, pointing out that your plans for offing yourself before retirement is not common among people that aren't fucking retarded and thus the majority of the population has every intent on retiring is indicative of what exactly? did you enjoy being wrong about ralph lauren so much that you had to extend your dipshittery elsewhere?

Shell isn't even that good an investment. I bought several hundred ExxonMobil shares with my paper route money in like 1998. Now that is a nice return. Glad I didn't go with BP since they seem to have fucked up repeatedly in the last 10 years.

Haliburton too. Got that in 2003, since then it has split and appreciated about 500%. The other one I was looking at at the time was TransOcean. Dodged a bullet there >.>

Also when was the last time the government sold 4 billion in capital assets to make their income statement look good.

Neat. An interesting fact that is commonly left out.
