Figure out who makes the harddrive. The BIOS should tell you. Then download the hdd manufacturer's diagnostic cd and burn to a cdr. Then run the diag on the harddrive. If it comes back with any issues, there's your problem. You could also try booting from a linux live cd / rescue cd and see if you can run fsck on all of the partitions. This may help temporarily in that you may get access to some of your files. Copy them elsewhere quickly before the hdd totally shits the bed.
Conclusion, replace the harddrive. Hope your data is still intact. Restore from backups.
