Some rapists pay child support from jail - if you're on a pension your pension doesn't stop. The state could also seize your bank accounts and any tax returns you are due from pre-incarceration. Social Security, SSD, SSI and SSR continue until you are convicted and for 30 days afterwards, so someone who sits in jail for a year before trial could actually have a decent amount in the bank.
