Teen Convicted Of Gun Possession In Online Photos

(AP) GOLDEN, Colo. A teenager who posted Internet photos of himself posing with guns, including one photo captioned "Angel o' death on wings o' lead," has been convicted of possession of a handgun by a juvenile.

Defense attorney Barrett Weisz said he would appeal.

The Evergreen High School student was acquitted on two other charges of handgun possession Tuesday.

The 16-year-old boy's photos were posted on the popular social networking site MySpace.com. He posed with a number of rifles and a .45-caliber pistol, a .22-caliber revolver and a .357-caliber revolver.

Juveniles in Colorado are not allowed to possess handguns, but the law allows parents to give their children permission to possess guns in their homes.

The boy's parents testified that their son had permission to handle the weapons.

The father, a gun collector who is an airline pilot and retired Air Force pilot, said he gave the boy and his brother extensive training in the safe handling of weapons.

"That doesn't mean juveniles could run around the house and do whatever he wanted with the gun," Jefferson County District Judge Brian Boatright said, noting that the father testified that his sons were not allowed to load or fire the weapons unless he was present.

The teen, who has been held in detention since his arrest in February, was to be sentenced June 1. Boatright set bond at $5,000 and ordered that the boy be evaluated and that a safety plan drawn up before he could be freed.

Evergreen High School is in the same district as Columbine High School, where two teenage gunmen killed 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves in 1999.

Stupid Nanny State.  :(

The only ones who should have punished the kid are the parents.
there's no reason for him to be punished in the first place; his dad gave him permission

the funny thing is at the same time the brits are saying "it's ok to commit assualt, we'll just give you a warning"

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/mai...ml&sSheet=/portal/2006/04/03/ixportaltop.html

You could be jumped by guys that have just never been caught, get the crap beaten out of you, ribs broken and bruises everywhere...the guy get a warning and heads off to the pub to enjoy a beer after all his physicial exertion while you go to the hospital. Brilliant!

For me it would all depend on how he was holding the weapons. If he was holding them in a safe way then no problem. If he was trying to look like some gangster then he and I would have problems.

Heck, there's lame 'joke' pictures of me in my 20's holding guns like an urban delinquent

BUT

I'm still handling them safely, i.e. no finger on the trigger, muzzle pointed in a safe direction, etc.

Since I was almost shot once, I'm a safety nazi with them things :fly:

HAHAHAHA

why can i imagine you at 20 surrounded by 30 empty Busch cans and a few shotguns at your feet..

LMFAO

That's bull. You photoshop anything now days. He could just say that the photo was manipulated and how are they going to prove it wasn't. Contrary to CSI and LAw & Order most cities don't have an image specialist on the payroll and don't have the cash to hire one for crap like this.

There is a gas station not to far from my office that is located in a bad ghetto neighborhood. It doesn't have any safety gas or anything else to prevent robbery. Except for pictures all over the counter and the walls behind the registers of the indians that run the place shooting machine guns, shot guns, flame thrower, hand guns etc. Tons of them. When you walk up to the counter they keep one hand under the counter on their side at all times. They haven't been robbed in a long time.

I'm going to forward this thread to the authorities.

I'm ok with the laws (to an extent), what I'm not ok with comes in two forms. First, spotty enforcement of laws as pertaining to myspace. Some kid poses with guns = BADBADBAD. Some HS Sophmore posts 45 seconds of her webcam striptease = MOREMOREMORE.

Second, I have huuuuge problems with these kids getting expelled from school over online antics. That crap didn't happen on school grounds, it didn't impact the school in any way, how can they justify ruining that child's entire social structure and educational opportunities (at least until they get to a new school).

Bah, I'm also one of those bastards that doesn't believe in jail time for minor drug offenses, so consider my viewpoint a bit skewed on this one.
