From what I remember (it was on Maximum Exposure or some show like that) he did it with a regular bike (the first pass) the second pass that didn't work was his own specially modified bike. They showed him "warming up" on it prior to all this and you can see lava break and the tire go into the lava. I wonder if that did enough damage to the bike to cause it to crack like it did.
