I had an oak stump that easily grew 30lbs of chicken in the woods ( maitake) every year, but i never had the balls to eat it in case i was mistaken

There is cause for concern - you have to really educate yourself on the various body parts and growth patterns to make safe identification. Maitake is "hen-of-the woods". Chicken-of-the-woods" is quite different.
Maitake grows on recently dead trees, adjacent to the ground. Chicken grows from a few inches to several feet off the ground, out of side of recently dead trees. We also gather "turkey-tail" for tea which is different again.

Saw Sammy Hagar and The Circle last night. Amazing the guy just turned 71 and can still sing like that.
