French bread has a very short shelf life, so bathing it in milk and eggs helps you get use out of what is otherwise an inedible stone. Turing it into croutons is also a good use. Oh, and stale bagels can be sliced thinly and baked into bagel chips. We got a gift of more bagels than we could eat when Sam was born, so many bagel chips were made.
