I'm beginning to feel the furry, even though I shouldn't.

A few weeks ago my dad and I took my son and my nephew to Dinosaur Valley State Park out in Glenrose, TX. Boys that age can't get enough of "adventuring" and we had a fantastic time. The weather was perfect, the river was cool and clear, we saw lizards and snakes and hunted for fossils (dad's a geologist/paleontologist) and we all marvelled at how exciting it was to stand in the massive, ancient footprints of dinosaurs. It was the perfect guy's day out. We returned home exhausted and sunburned and pigged out on Mexican food.

I found out this afternoon that my nephew's other (paternal) grandparents, religious fundies both (this is not an overstatement by any means), were very upset when they heard about this. They are taking my nephew right back to Glenrose this weekend for their own day of fun, only this time they will be visiting the Creation Museum strategically placed a half mile down the road from the lies and wickedness of the State Park.

This fills me with rage, though I suppose I shouldn't let it bother me. He isn't my son, first of all, and my sister and brother-in-law will be going as well so obviously none of the important decision makers thought it fit to object. Their specific intent is to undo our "scientific brainwashing", though, which profoundly offends me. And this isn't new. When my son was born the grandmother in question declared that God did not like the fact that I wasn't married. I was so engraged that I reminded her that one of her daughters is retarded (which she is) so she must have really pissed him off. I have nothing but disgust and contempt for her. She believes she is a prophet. Why are these people allowed to walk around in the world? Honestly. It's a good thing I have normal blood pressure.

Go ahead and tell me I'm wrong for being angered by all of this and remind me that in the long term it will prove trivial. They're old. They'll be dead soon anyway, right?

I don't even believe that science and God are mutually exclusive. But again, it's the motive here. The insidiousness of an old lady's self righteousness. I'm petty, I know.

Uh, so this lady is saying dinosaurs don't exist and it was against her religion for you to take the kid and show him these things? Obviously dinosaurs are real and can co exist with religion. That lady is crazy.

You seem to be acting more calm than I would be, in your shoes.

Just make sure that any time you are around him (the nephew) that you keep teaching him whatever scientific knowledge you can.

Actually, it might be a good thing for the child to see both sides of the fence. I think one of the main reasons why people are religious is because their parents taught it to them and they know nothing else. If they are given choices and wide varieties of experiences, maybe they would make better decisions and make up their own minds.

The maliciousness that your sister's side of the family to take the child to a park to correct the "wrong" you have done is just petty and rude and insulting and plain stupid. Do you pelt them with pentagrams to counteract their fundimentalist diatribes? No. They should not shout their beliefs to counteract what you did with that child (which ironically enough was explore God's earth with more detail than normal).

"And did you know children that the #1 cause of death and wars in the history of the world is religion?"

She believes the footprints are fake, and that fossils are too.

Even the creationist museum admits to the existence of dinosaurs, so this is even more silly.

I do that, but I'm not trying to convert him to anything is what my point is. I'm not teaching him that religion is wrong or that he must believe in all scientific theories. He's 8. We're just out having fun, observing what anyone with common sense can see. Their motive, however, is indoctrination. They actually dislike people who aren't like them. And it's creepy.

Assuming the parents are ok with it. But I agree

Saddens me that there are children growing up in homes where the parents are religious fundamentalists and brainwash their children.

People need to see both sides, no matter what their final decision is. I've been trying to get Juli to read some of the atheist literature I own, but she wont.

You could read some Buddism or Islam, or Taoism instead. It's something different.

Exactly. You're handling it well.

My son is the product of a Christian, and an Atheist. I don't purposefully teach him religion is wrong, yet I don't keep my opinion about religion quite around him. And I don't expect anything different from Juli either. He should grow up learning absolutely everything. No knowledge should ever be held back from anyone.

Agreed....and both sides should be prepared to answer the questions from the contradictoy issues.
