I don't keep up with hardware much these days and I'm having trouble finding a RAID solution that fits my needs. Mostly I've been looking through CDW and Newegg trying to find stuff and I end up with little to nothing in the way of my criteria. Anyone know much about desktop solutions?

Specs:

SATA II support
Supports 4 drives
RAID5/10
PCI Expresss 8x
MAC OS 10.5 Support

I don't care if it is esata or sata. If esata, then I need to find a decent enclosure too.

Are you looking for a RAID card or a NAS that has RAID capabilities? Given those requirements listed, you won't find a "desktop" RAID card, but only server offerings. That brings up the price quite a bit too.

For RAID cards, I've always liked 3ware. People say these days that 3ware has slipped and their cards don't perform well against Adaptec's offerings. I don't know the specifics. All I know is that 3ware has native Linux support and the 3 cards I've used have worked well for me.

3ware 9650SE-12ML
Costly. If you don't mind using a PCI Express x4 card, then 9650SE-4LPML would be significantly cheaper.

OS X is supported by them.

I've been told really good things about 3Ware stuff, but everything I saw on Newegg didn't have anything about OSX compatibility.

Why would you want a desktop raid?

I have 9GB of RAM and a badass video card. My performance bottleneck is from disk reads and writes.

Don't take everything you see on Newegg as the last word. Always check with the manufacturer first, especially warranties. Hence why I posted a link to 3ware's support page listing OS X compatibility.
