wtf...someone just got shot in our building

Birmingham has Cleveland beat .. and ATL is above us. It's funny though, because you don't see too much of it, unless you are out late at night (like, after 3am).

These break it down by amount of people in a city.

I did miss probabaly being involved in a drive-by by about 10 -15 minutes though. I took the shortcut around traffic and dipped through North Bham Saturday on my way home. There were prolly 30 police cars (police station was 1 block down from the scene) and about 400 bullets (all nicely marked with little, numbered, white cards) in a gas station parking lot. Store had no windows, neither did any of the cars sitting in the parking lot, and there were ambulances rolling in from all directions.

What's sad is the elementary school is 1 block up, and a church is right across the street. Stupid people.
Eh, gun are the least of your worries.

Most violent crime is committed by acquaintences or relatives of the victim. Most people who use a gun the commission of a violent crime are black and under 25 (18% compared to 15% of Hispanics and 12% of whites). The victims of crimes involving firearms are mostly male. Most criminals who use firearms are recidivists.

So you just have to be careful if you are 1) Male, 2) know people who are convicted criminals, 3) Black, and even then only 46% result in death.

You have twice as many shoes than I have. That should say something.

We need to get you to a shoe store?

See, if you had titled your thread: "Someone was shot in Atlanta" no one would have read your thread because Atlanta is totally the fucking ghetto and people are shot in your dreadful city every day.

Uhm, you live near Baltimore right?

Glad all you CNN people are okay. Sorry you had such a disturbing day. :(

And what the news ALWAYS fails to report around here, is that the bullet receivers are not exactly 'innocent bystanders' in most of the cases.

I just saw a news blurb about a young woman shot in Washington State. The two newsie, info-babe attorneys, argued that women need to be able to sue the police to get better protection on restraining orders. Nobody else was quizzed about any alternatives or the actual cost of assigning each female a personal 24 hour cop. It just no longer comes to fore in any public discourse that a woman should be allowed, in fact encouraged, to get a firearm and some training under such circumstances.

On another note:

Iraq's violent death rate in 2006 was 56.49 per 100,000 residents (16,273 deaths, and a population per Wiki of 28,807,000).

Record US murder rates for two key cities:
- Washington, DC - 1991; 83.1 (482 murders; population 598,000)
- Atlanta, GA - 1973; 57.7 (271 murders; population 470,000)

My personal projection for Baltimore in 2007 is a murder rate per 100,000 residents of about 47.

My point here is not to diminish Iraq (there are many factors, including comparing a country to a city), rather to point out that our cities are simply not safe... not safe at all.

Everyone should be responsible for their own personal protection.

That's what the term PERSONAL protection freaking means.

the woman was at work when this happened...you can't bring guns to work as far as I'm aware

I'm still trying to figure out why so many handicapped spaces are needed at every store. I haven't even gotten to murder yet. :yikes:

Personal protection does not necessarily mean firearms. From what I gathered from the story it seemed like the woman knew she had a problem. Had she been actively thinking she would've gone straight to somewhere safe, to building security, to the police, or done SOMETHING. Instead she walked into a crowded area full people not trained to do anything to help her.

Well technically, it depends on the state, who you work for, and your own preference.

It's too bad for her but it wasnt exactly random IIRC.

I wonder what I would have done if some guy brushed past me dragging a woman by the hair and holding a gun. "Move out the way, pimpin'."

I probably would have just said "lol black people" and kept going.

My employer does not have a policy, either spoken or (more specifically) in writing, which denies me the right to have my firearm with me. Guess what's in my backpack on the floor next to me?

No, it was not random.

that would seriously piss me the fuck off if I knew a coworker was bringing a gun into work with him

do you work in a post office? rambo fantasies? why would you do that? you could just as easily leave it in the car

You should be allowed to. Why do you think the perps usually go after their bitches at work?

If you want to increase your risk of being shot, go to a gun free zone. If it became a national law that females who got a restraining order automatically were issued a permit to carry (good for anywhere), it would stop this shit dead in its tracks. Most women would not even need to take advantage of the permit.

Aye, even here in NY you can bring your gun anywhere (except courthouses) unless signs are posted.

o_O

Why? If you are carrying for personal protection leaving it in the car rather defeats the purpose.
