Why are we designing and building new fighters to replace our current stock when the only countries in the world who have comparable technology are the people we're selling our old fighters to? Couldn't we save a lot of government money by just not selling them our current planes?

ar15.com has frequent discussions on the F-22 but nothing quite as simple as this o_O

You dont get to be the best and stay the best by sitting on your ass.

Everyday someone else is having an idea, or making a technology, whether or not they can act on it or do something with it really isnt of consequence. Right now, we have the world's foremost aerospace industry, we have the money, so we are building the planes. There is absolutely no way to predict what is going to happen in the next 20-30 years (life-cycle of the last generation of military planes).

The only question should be, is this the absolute best plane we can build?

For something you can grasp:

Do you think ALL the chinese engineering students are going back to China to design flower pots that will make free clean burning energy to share with EVERYONE?

we dont NEED the F-22... but you have to replace your old equipment when they reach the end of their lifecycle. Technology changes, and our fighting equipment evolves with it to make wars safer for GI Joe and GI Jane, and more lethal for the enemy.

One redneck to another: "This is my son, he learned a new word today. "

Son points at sky. "Arpane! Arpane!!"

Redneck: "Good job little fellow, how old are you?"

Father: Beaming with pride. "He's 15 years old!

Bad joke, my dad used to tell it alll the time.

Really the main reason is that the jet has been in the pipeline and military pipelines are notoriously long. In reality, its likely to be useless for the small scale warfare that seems likely for the foreseeable future.

Russia has a thrust vector stealth jet (Google it FG!) that is more maneuverable than ours. The 22 is replacing more than just our 15s and 16s et al, it's replacing the 117 as well. It hits targets that don't even know it's there. Did you guys see the staggering kill ratios this thing has? It was like 10:1 on a 15. That's some shit.

Need it? Not really.

Is it still a good idea to have. Absolutely. Even if every nation in the world was our ally it would still be beneficial to have the most advanced technology. There is always an alpha. Holds true at the individual level as well as the geopolitical level. There will always always always be one country on top of the totem pole and better us than anyone else.

Because the Chinese, EU and Russians are also designing future weapons of war? Besides, if by some very small chance a group of terrists one day steals a couple of CF-18s from a Canadian air base it would be nice to know we have a fighter that can knock it out of the sky without breaking a sweat.

Wait, when did Canada get planes?

Wait, flower pots produce energy now? Those Chinese are AWESOME!

Do we need to replace an air superiority system that's 3 decades old with something that will absolutely destroy its competition? Yes.
