yeah.... wanna tell me where all the rare earth metal deposits are in the US?

Also, points 2 and 3

2) Russia and russian hardware now accounts for less than 15% of all US launches.

3) We produce more than 45% of our own oil. Another 40% comes from Canada, then the remaining less than 10% comes from saudi arabia and other OPEC sources

We have rare earth deposits here. Was talk of allowing production the last time neodymium prices went through the roof several years ago. It's an environmentally nasty process. We'd just rather screw up China's environment, get it cheaper, and pat ourselves on the back for being "green" instead.

One of the articles Immi linked to specifically cited Russian rocket engines.

A lot of our oil goes on the world market with all the rest. It's not like we keep it all here, though that one might be the easiest or fastest to switch to self-sufficiency.

Whatever increased costs of doing that stuff here be more than offset by getting out of the 100-odd other countries our military is in and not needing near as much of it.

Depending on other nations stuff for your own military when you don't really have to is still a dumb thing to do.

That's a great post, but the people that are opposed to you here are opposed to you here. You should have set up a sock puppet name to Green Steve who would have done the identical post, and everybody would have clapped for him.

If we use up all the worlds' supply first, then it doesn't matter who we owe money to.

Never took you for a Rumsfeld/Cheney style neo-con.

Just goes to show you never know who you're talking to on the internet I guess.

The truth is this: without the military "out there" in foreign states, we wouldn't have shipping, we wouldn't have cheap energy, we wouldn't have our way of life as we live it now.

So go ahead and agitate for "bring 'em all home, let God sort out them damn socialists", but at least recognize that you're throwing stones while inside of a glass house.

Ya we like to think highly of ourselves.
Truth is nothing is irreplaceable. We could vaporize right now and while the rest of the world might look different it would keep on keeping on.
We've become the same sort of imperialists we once shed blood to break free from. We just do it through economics and more covert force rather than overt, that's all.

So, your position is "pull the troops home, we'll all die eventually anyway"?

not a ringing endorsement of your fiscal advice.
