Regardless, will the phone instantly stop working when they stop releasing OS updates for it?

No, but it's starting to have the shitty battery life issue a lot of other 6P users are reporting. Shame too because I really like the phone. But it's not even a year in my hands and the battery life has drained from 2 days to just about 1.
 
You misunderstand the Nexus product line. That's exactly who it's for.

I got the Nexus as it was what Motorola was before it became Moto, a quality phone with a near stock android.

Plus, I've had zero need to load a custom rom on it so far.

Need? Of course not. No one ever NEEDS a custom ROM. However, I can get 2-3 days of light/medium use out of my phone.
