I think you're missing the point.

To the Russians that "interference" is simply journalists reporting on their actions.

To us that "interference" was spreading false information in select areas to change public perception.

But even if the actions were the same I'd say yes, it's absolutely ok for us to interfere with the pretend elections of an oppressive, authoritarian regime and downright American to resist the same interference by that regime in our legitimately democratic process. I am perfectly ok with Radio Free Europe - a beacon of liberty designed to battle communist totalitarianism - blasting the truth over the airwaves for Russian people to hear and learn about the actual crimes and human rights violations of their government.

Our way of governing is better than theirs. Our way of life is better than theirs. Our values are better than theirs.

That's not quite the same as hacking into their government's systems in order to sow distrust and spreading false propaganda. That's the job of the CIA and NSA, not CNN.

Yeah, though I'm also referring in a larger sense to western democracy. I'm including the UK, France, Germany, most of NATO and the EU, Australia and our other Five Eye partners. Not just America but the very ideals that Russia abhors; accountability, transparency, and civic trust over kleptomaniacal oligarchs. A free press, checks on power, liberal education, and independent oversight of both private and public institutions, trust and faith in those long standing institutions.

We're not perfect at any of those, no one is and no one will be. But we sure as shit try to be and we justifiably feel outrage when our politicians violate those principles. Russia, on the other hand, fears those things. They hate it when people are informed, hate it when their most powerful leaders have to answer to the will of the people, they don't believe they need the consent of the governed.

That's the difference, we try to live by those values and even when we fail we keep trying. Putin's Russia resists those very same ideals at every turn because they don't want their people to realize they have another option.
