We will be long term dog-sitting for my brother's #2 starting next week. He's a great dog, 4 years old and goes from goofy to scare-the-crap-out-of-the-mail-carrier in a second.

Those are some of the smartest, most loyal/protective there is. Their brains are super smart and actively thinking all the time. Worst thing one can do is nothing. They need a job/purpose...like border collies.
I love this dog, and he's always been with kids in a family setting. My husband runs, so will take him on some short runs, and we have a decent yard. The kids and I will take him for walks and to dog parks nearby, there are a few.
I don't know what purpose or job for him, but I do know he does the protective thing pretty well, and is well-trained by my brother.
Job/purpose means just that. Is:. Not a lapdog, ornament, goofy pet. Active mind needs activity, just like people with active minds.
I'm just saying they're intelligent and want stuff that works their minds. Doesn't have to be guard dog training or whatever. What you describe is great. Balls, frisbees, running, big yard, etc. Let your kids just freestyle play with him/her. It'll be good for all of them. And burn energy, both physically and mentally. Sleep good.
I was more complimenting the dog and your taking care of it, not telling you what to do with it. From the sound of it doing great.
Maddux - lost him in December. I need to get a pic of Rocky, our newest family member. Both are/were 75 lap dogs.

Beaglish, as I call it. Part beagle, and part some kind of spaniel. All of them were rescues.
We met a pit bull rescue named Sugar (all white, as large as a 40lb bag of sugar) and she was incredibly sweet and loving.
I love all animals, but feel so bad for pit bulls and breeds like them because of how they are bred and have breathing issues. They can't run around like average dogs can. :/
Most pit bulls are very healthy. We had one who was so active, taking her for walks was enough. We used to go on 45 mike rides - I trained her quickly on the leash to run along next to the bike.
Bulldogs, on the other hand ... Finally, some people are starting to breed them healthier. Look at the pics from those two above - nose are not so short, and the hind legs are pretty long and straight. Look up Olde English Bulldogge.
