You should tie them over on their side. It stimulates growth by exposing more of it to the sun. This is from my horticulturist friend who grows.
It wouldn't expose more of it to the sun, it would cause it to think it had fallen over and reorient itself as to what "up" was. That's what would cause growth.
It evolved that branching pattern and leaf growth to get as much sun as it could

Yeah I believe the first thing you said.

Second thing, the plant shades the lower branches. Some branches extend out to get sun but there are many that die off because they are covered.

But with this technique you get more growth and more yield. I've seen this first hand. It works.

You can train those things to grow however you want. I've seen guys weave them into climbing ivy and shit. Takes a lot of time and pruning and stuff though. Not something a commercial grower has time for.

You can do this with almost any plant with enough time a patience.
