Ontopic Longer Coke ad to air tonight during the Olympics. Lets discuss language...

if we're going to teach fictional languages, tolkiens definitely win out. Theyre the only ones that are structurally complete.

You're intentionally missing my point about the trolls on Twitter. Did you miss all that retarded, racist bullshit?

I don't do twitter. I do watch the news and heard a bunch of selfproclaimed newsmen/wimmen desperate for ratings immediately talk about the extreme views and that If you liked the ad, you were good and in support of immigration and multiculturalism, and if you didn't clearly you were anti-immigration and a racist. I dismissed these as desperate for attention and ratings.

If you're original post was to recognize a debate was starting specifically because of their views, then I don't know how to support those views. But, if your OP was about a general debate about 'national language' vs 'all languages should be supported' I'm in with my comments.

I think that's my point. I don't have a problem with people speaking other languages, but we have large swaths of people that aren't making the effort to speak both the local language and their own. That just seems like it can't be good.

Just curious where you come up with this... I guess I've known far too many people not born in the US who actually do make an effort to learn English. My dad's first language wasn't English but he learned just fine. I'm pretty sure Luis' wasn't English either and same with his parents - they all learned. Same with quite a few friends who are Filipino. I could go on and on....

Yes you have some uneducated people not learning, but all people I know who have moved here have made an effort. Even my son's classmate's grandmother did her best to learn English and she only lives here maybe a few months out of the year before she heads back to her home country.

Having an official language isn't a bad idea. However if people think having an official language will help force the issue, I think that is short sighted. People will learn if they want to - not because it's "mandated"

I do think that when you live somewhere you should attempt to learn the language. I've only had one friend move countries like that (non-military that is) and she took the time to learn. She also taught her daughter to speak both English and native language.

Yeah yeah wall of text, suck it!

Ugh, I wish all my callers spoke english. Trying to understand someone who speaks Amheric with a mish mash of english words when they are yelling about someone threatening them with a knife and they are hiding in the bushes and they dont know where they are, really stresses me out.

Or wasting 20 min getting an interpreter on the line for someone who calls 911 because his roommate threatened to kick him out over rent payments, waste of timeeeeeeeeee.

Or taxi cab drivers who just keep repeating "just get police here now" and refuse to answer any questions about what is going on.
