WTT: hard drives

You do know you can "build" one for about half the price, right?

Well maybe not half price, but certainly with a better warranty.

And you can find cheaper than this easily.

You can get much cheaper enclosure if you don't need all of that connectivity.

I have that exact enclosure with a 120GB drive in it.

edit - mine may be a gen older than that one, its only a USB2.0, without all the other connections on the back.
Still works great, tho.

All I said was it was a nice price. Anytime you build your own setup it's going to be cheaper.

to lazy to read the replies but there are pci cards to connect sata devices. i have a box of hdds full of data and i connect them when i need something off them via usb adapter. i think its safer than having them running all the time even though i only occasionally need stuff off each.

no, but we only have one laptop and it spends most of the time sitting on the bar in the boss's loft. i heard about the airport security screening starting to do hdd dumps though. spooky shit. i may start encrypting everything just as a matter of course. is there a good free desktop encryption program out there?

dunno about free but this is what we're using http://www.credant.com/

if one got suited by one of the organizations that end in AA, could refusing to divulge and encryption key be covered under your fifth amendment rights to avoid self-incrimination, or would it be considered hindering prosecution?

I was in the midst of installing ram in my buddys computer last night since he only had 512mb when he asked "this means I can download more movies right?". I look at his hard drive and he has 2 - 20gb hard drives :fly:

I walked away very slowly...

I know it doesnt matter but how in the hell do you buy a computer setup that comes with a flat screen stock but only a 20gb hd??? I mean that has to be one OLLLLD flat screen

Ended up telling him to throw away the computer and we will get him something new. He was under the impression that a 20 gig hard drive, 1.6 processor and 512mb of ram would allow him to be the super movie pirate guy at work(brings movies in for his boss). He keeps asking me to show him how to do stuff on his computer yet his computer wont do anything he wants, blames me, lol
