You work 45 hours? I only do 38/39, but it always has seemed like you guys work far more hours than the average Brit.

Normal work week here is 37.5, but we have lots of breaks because we have to follow EU laws etc.

I get paid by the hour at the moment so I just never have any breaks, except I went to the pub today as a Christmas treat.

Be happy. I'm salary and often work a lot of hours, no overtime pay ever, always on call, and if anyone has to come in on off hours it's typically me. But always knowing exactly what you're going to be paid is handy.

Hourly pay can suck though, if you go to the doctors or whatever you can almost see the money falling off your pay check every minute. And when you're paid like $18/hour that makes a big difference.

Depends on whether you get called out a lot I suppose. My dad works on call, but sometimes he gets 2-5 calls in a week.

A previous employer had "volunteer" on-call status and the people who signed up got a pay raise for it. Every company should work that way.

My department's the one doing the calling, and we have a high enough "clueless" population that it happens more often than it should.
