They can mimic any number. One of my friends had a scammer call from her mother's number who was in the room with her when it happened.

I won’t relive the whole social security calls story from a year ago. They even use official numbers. The screenshot of my contact info just shows how cereal I am. I save them!

There are sites for the non-tech savvy that will assist anyone in doing that, on a one time basis or as an ongoing thing.

My folks got the phony IRS one once. They were smart enough to know they dont call first.
Told them about googling phone numbers and scam alert sites and stuff.

When you have outstanding debt and receive a call supposedly from your income provider and the caller ID is an actual official number, it’ll make anyone jump a little.

I actually did receive a call from an actual IRS collector once, but it was to inform me that I had a letter on the way to me that I needed to not “file away”.

If I don't recognise the number I don't answer. If it's important they'll leave a message. That's my system anyway.
Its not like the saying is "Opportunity will call first".
