Which netbook?

True, but once one model has gained mass appeal it creates it own community which support it. Though it's not the same for all open source software, and OS is pretty serious and would harness the most attention.

And there is the issue. Once/if one main OS is adopted (Ubuntu), then you almost lose the open sourceness since they determine/drive the market...

The democracy that is open-source is a strange beast. Open Source is cool until you realize that everyone really CAN make their own OS and software support becomes a real pain in the asss.

*cough* Dont forget about the travesty of legal contracts called GPL. (this has nothing to do with open source, just with linux and the FSF)

If Microsoft and Apple collectively filed for bankruptcy, or there was a nuclear war on the west coast.

Nah.. It would just take the Ubuntu developers to get serious about competing with Microsoft. IMO, Apple isn't in the same game, as they only make an OS for their hardware, and vice-versa..

Someone will always have to determine that, which ok as long as it is still release under and open license..

This issue: Unbuntu &c. are GPL software. They can never be commercialized. Anything that is statically linked to them MUST be GPLed. It's a trap. CDDL and BSD licenses are actually less restrictive, there is incentive for the research (open source) community, and business at the same time o_O

Apple only develops for their hardware, makes it easy because they have complete vertical integration. Like the Oil Industry. If the only other major OS went splat though it would be a total loss to retarget consumer desktops.

I dont know what IBM does these days or I wouldve said them. They have always been like Apple but for business. Making money off huge proprietary installations. OS/2 didnt completely suck, compared to 95 though. I doubt they would make the same mistake they did with the MCA bus...

It's fun to speculate. There are a couple small closed source OSs that people have made too, SkyOS, BeOS (haiku is a clone).

embedded linux is where open source wins. don't gotta fuck around with liscensing fees for software on a peice of hardware you make.
