tennis shoes, although i have no idea why. i don't think it's a regional thing since growing up both sneakers and tennis shoes were always used interchangeably...

i'm guessing the basketball crowd goes with sneakers.

Good God no. The last thing you want is to bruise the lawn. You only have to see the pictures of the scrubland Fly plays on to realise he has no idea about suitable footwear to preserve a croquet lawn. You wear croquet shoes of course, preferably in a subdued tone.

Always called them gym shoes if they were at all sports related. No differentiating by words. Yes, I have running shoes for running, and a shitty pair of gym shoes for dry gardening work. I call them both gym shoes.
