FYI Watch the ESA (hopefully) land a probe on a comet 500 million kilometers from Earth

it weighs 3 grams or something ridiculous on the comet. If it was in immediate danger, it would have spiraled off into space again already.

There is a danger later in the mission when the comet starts heating up, but for now its good.

except a big part of that mission is dealing with exactly what goes on when the comet starts to heat up.

They may be able to attempt to redeploy the harpoons tho.

I was thinking they would back when they first said it. They can send new software to the probe and see if that can retrigger the launchers. Or even send new software that can tell them what's wrong with the launchers.

Either way, unlike in the 60's, something like this doesnt' mean instant failure anymore.

Cleaned up pic.

itll make it just fine. they fully planned for this, and it can accomplish its primary mission on the un-recharged battery with room to spare. The shade only affects the "above and beyond" mission where it needed to charge the secondary batt.

It may be possible to reconfigure the lander's gear and "hop" to a new location, but there may not be enough time to do the analysis required for such a risky operation. Philae is not getting as much power from the sun as planned. The batteries will last through tomorrow, but perhaps not beyond the 60-hour mark. At that point, Philae could be put into a hibernation mode and awoken in a few months, if more solar energy hits its position. That's a rather big if.

So, it's not 'sound' as we know it, but it is a created frequency that is able to be captured as technically the area around the comet isn't pure vacuum. the coma and ionized gasses that surround the comet work as a transmission medium for ionized particles being sloughed off the comet, and can be translated into an aural range.

The comet has a voice, and it can be heard here.

morons gonna moron.

theyre demanding the guy step down from his position. The esa should tell them to go fuck themselves.
