If you don't want to read the article, it basically says that the parent company that owns the rights to the Smurfs together with UNICEF have made a little commercial. In it, the Smurfs are shown laughing and playing and then they get blown to bits in an air raid. The point is to raise money to reform ex-child soldiers.

Part of me thinks this is funny. The Smurfs are just a bunch of blue, midget communists (http://www.iamlost.com/features/smurfs/commies.shtml) anyways. Its their own fault they done got blown up for being pinko Commies.

The other part thinks this is terrible because who will really pay attention to this commercial? Kids. Adults will just click on past it, ignore it, or be taking a piss break. If some little kid saw it, it would probably just freak them out without really teaching them anything. It could also have the opposite desired effect, that exposing them to more violence at an early age might spur them to being child soldiers.

And finally part of me just doesn't understand how the hell this is supposed to raise any money. I suppose some people would pay cause they thought it was funny and wanted a sequel. But isn't that the opposite reaction than what they were going for? I guess no one told them that the real money is in Smurf porno...

So what do you guys think?

Edit : the video isn't on the website, but there is a short news clip out there that's kinda like a slide show with sound that shows a few frames from the commercial.

People are so dumb. How will the world prosper without an industrial war machine powering its economies?

And Smurfs? They should've killed those Pokemon fucks.

how many kids these days honestly remember the smurfs? anyone with any emotional attachment to the show is at least in their late teens, twenties now. maybe this generation will think it's just another silly meaningless cartoon and not have the same traumatic effect.

I think its still shown pretty regularly in Europe. I just don't see how its supposed to raise money for anything.

II read the article - and the point is to SHOCK adults in Belgium into paying attention to their 'message' of war's affect to children. The ad is supposed to appear after 9pm when most small children should be nestled into bed.

The ad remarks that the Belgium population is basically complacent about the affects of war and are trying a new SHOCK campaign.

Very interesting indeed! What is scary to me is that the populace of Belgium is so numb to the situation that they need to be SHOCKED. The mass majority of Americans would be appalled by this ad and it’s real doubtful that it would even air here. It’s a scary world out there.
