Putin wants Ukraine to be allied with him instead of the West for several reasons:
1) Kiev was the original capital of the Kievan Rus' which would become the Kingdom of Rus' and finally modern Russia.
2) The warm water port in the Crimea. Which is Russia only port that is able to be open year round.
3) The Ukraine has long been Russia's bread basket. This includes Stalin's Holodomor aka "Extermination by hunger" or "Hunger-extermination"
4) Either 7 or 8 oil/natural gas pipelines run through Ukraine territory headed to the West.
Also you can blame my ancestors on my mother's side of the family for the creation of Russia.
