Thats why diesel will be important.
There would be a lot of houses with heating oil tanks just waiting to be siphoned.

Except they're all spread out and comms will go down quickly. Assuming the culling is completely random, Austin will have 96k people.90% die off still leaves 33 million or so people here. At least as much as some small developed nations have now.
Yes we'd lose a lot of braintrust but there's still enough in there to get things going.
It's not like they have to reinvent the wheel, or make the jump from alchemy to chemistry, or invent democracy, or discover bacteria, or a million other things that are already knowns.
May not have every last thing we have today in short order but that is a massive head start from the first time around.

And traffic will still be bad for weeks.
Shh you. You’re giving away my secrets.Don't listen to kiwi, she'll try to convert you all to a cult!

Come to think of it there is still countless pieces of horse-drawn farm equipment sitting all over the Midwest and some I've seen down here too.
Some of it abandoned and rusting away, some in sheds not rusting away, some as yard art, some restored to like new as people collect it and do that as a hobby, and some maybe even still in use.
Our hay rake was one. Still had the seat on it where you'd sit and hold the reins, just somebody over the years took the horse hitch off and put a tractor hitch on it that's all. Wheel driven with simple gears and levers. No need for a combustion engine or hydraulics or any of that.
Bunch of people had other stuff like that and a good portion of it is still around.
At 10% population we could still feed ourselves fine until technology came back.
All that stuff can be pulled by however many people it takes to make 1 or 2 horsepower.Unless the horses die off too.
Or refuse to work with us anymore.
48k will have an IQ of less than 100. You sure you thats enough for comms, electricity, water, sewage, trash collection, car repair, and literally 10,000 other specialized things in a giant metro area? I say no way! There's a lot of good brains in this town, we'll be just fine at 96k.

That's not even considering the lower 48k stocked with weapons (cause its Texas) wanting to be the biggest ape in town.
If you think about it, only 10% of the world's pop is left non-zombified. You're going to get a significant portion of that 10% that is going to not be able to handle everyone and everything they know being gone. Gonna be a lot of suicides after. You would 100% end up with single digit percentages of survivors
Yes, to take care of something made for 300M people. Our power grid is all interconnected and fragile as fuck. If power generation stops in the Northeast/Northwest/Texas/etc, good luck getting any of the country running again.Ratio is the same as it is now, just 1/10 as many people to take care of and 10 times as many guns per capita!
I think suicide would take a bit to stabilize, if it ever did. You'd have the initial wave like you mentioned, but I think you'd still be losing people a year or two after the first wave was over.A good bit would die off in the weeks and months after the initial event for all sorts of various reasons. Out of meds and such.
And just hopelessness in general. Like you said, suicide.
And great point about medicine @Strings. Half this country is a fat fucking diabetic, so plan to cull another 50% in the weeks/months after.

Make that 44.6%. Hips is about to point out that some people are faking it.
