WTF The Nike Fuelband - or Why the Mayans Should Have Been Right

No, actually I learned that from following my gf's notes during the time she was earning her Master's degree. Working for pay is one of the most popular examples of positive reinforcement as it's something that everyone who studies any type of conditioning can relate to.

Ask Mort about it, or go read some wiki
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reward_system

fair point, paycheck is positive reinforcement...not in a classic reinforcement sense as it is quite removed from the action itself, but the older one is the easier they can link two events that are not linked time-wise

An accelerometer you put on your wrist... put it on your beatin' off hand and it'll probably tell you you're a world class athlete.

Did you learn how to oversimply a counter argument to the point of making it irrelevant from enemy?

Using a wristband to record your biometrics and record them to a smart phone app is not the 'exact same system' as doing a job to get paid which provides food and shelter. The motivations aren't even the same.

it is similar but not the same...the biggest difference is that the "reward" is information, like an overly wordy compliment which does act as positive reinforcement but not nearly to the extent that something sensational does (like a physical treat) or something monetary which allows us to buy those same physical treats

similar but removing the physical in Nike's case, does drop it quite a bit as a significant reward

Thank you, senor.

Asa 1, Duke 0

I think its more like Asa 1 Duke 0.75 because his point was valid as he was highlighting the differences which there are many... you are correct at it being a "reward" no doubt but he is most certainly correct in seeing the difference between a physical reward and one popping up on a screen, pavlov's experiment would never have worked with a picture of a treat, needed to be real

What happens when you factor in the fact that losing weight takes time, so as you are earning these illusory achievements you get a physical change as well?

Could you also comment on whether or not rewards based systems work on adults?

you fucking americans have to stop blaming everyone else (the government/daddy issues/obama) for being FAT. ya'll are fat cuz ya'll are lazy fucks.

You have to be able to point at a source of being fat before you can stop being fat. You have to know the cause of something before you can fix the problem.

That being said, only reason a hormonally normal person is fat is because they have not decided to not be fat

do you not understand the irony of this?

When tech didn't exist, people were more fit.

Now that tech exists, people are becoming less fit.

yet now we think tech is the answer to making people fit.

why not? it's the answer to everything else.

those rewards carry huge, people that successfully lose weight will often talk about fitting into a smaller size as keeping them going and examples similar.

Do rewards work on adults? yes very much so, but different personalities respond to different types of responses, some work harder with negative while many become disillusioned by those... some get a positive reward, a little treat at the end of the day as an example

no hard and fast rule on this... if there was, the catch all book would have been written a long time ago
