To add, it kind of depends on how, and how much, you drive.

If you're some daisy that just drives from their townhouse to their office building 3 miles away and maybe to acquire food on weekends, yes, you can limp around like that for a long time.

If however you want to have an actual, functional, reliable vehicle....the type you can jump in and travel 1000 or 2000 miles across the country and back again with a reasonable expectation of making it without some Richard Petty style roadside maintenance then no.

My vehicles are neither fashionable, nor exotic, nor clean, nor anything else, but any one of them could do exactly that right now, just get in and go.
Could yours?

By the time the boots fail the rest ain't far behind, just do the whole axle, it's actually easier than screwing around with boots and grease.
I can get a new set from Raxles, or some cheap Chinese shit from Rockauto.

I'll probably just rebuild the outer joint. No untoward noises or anything.

I think you're describing most of us.
Every one of my vehicles, though not pretty, you could jump in right now and go from TX to MN, or even CA to NY, and expect nothing less than a trouble-free ride.
If you can't, you're failing.

Q5 can do it.

Fit... other than a lack of A/C and the locks missing half the wafers, there's nothing really wrong with it. It's just got a bad history of spontaneously and leaving me stranded. Within the last year it lost an alternator, serp tensioner bearing, ignition switch AND shot a plug.

Corolla, well, it's still on jackstands. Finally bought a transmission jack, gonna have a proper go at it this weekend.

Dude, shit can break any time, unexpectedly. Went to lunch with boss and a few co-workers in his virtually new Lincoln. Came out, someone says "da fuq with dat tire?" Tie-rod snapped. While we were eating? Right as he put it in park? idk, it certainly wasn't a mile from the place when we whipped off I-75. I also lived being on a Salt & Pepper Shaker ride at the carnival and the door came open. The door was locked fine for a few spins. Then it wasn't, then it was ripped off on it's first hit against the ground. I've had bad luck at the carnival. And Cedar Point. FUckers.

The Buick has been so trouble free it feels weird not having to fix stuff.
I'd say this about my Saturn but since I made the last payment it would be bad luck. Oh wait, that already happened. Came home few days ago, got out the vehicle, went to shut door and entire handle assembly came off. I don't mind fixing the door, but really hate fucking with interior trim. I guess it doesn't have to be perfect, it is the family haul-every-dirty-thing vehicle.

Lot of the plastic clips are kind of one time use things or work loose or break popping panels off.
I hate messing with interior shit.
