Used the lathe today to open up the cavity in a -10AN weld-on nipple so that it would fit just over a .565" nipple on the balance tube of the Z. Then I welded the nipple on, and filled up some other nipples that had no use on the balance tube anymore.

Now I have a new idle air motor in the Z, and it works way better than the failing one I had in there before. I got the duty cycle all the way down to 20%, so there's plenty of overhead for the AC now too.

It fits just below the relay box.
 
Most cars now have drive-by-wire throttlebodies that take care of air bypass using the throttle plate. That's like a "last 10 years" sort of innovation though.

my 2008 corolla has that, and Toyota aint known to be the type to rapidly innovate and integrate new technologies.

Most of the time its just called an Idle Air Control module. IAM might be something weird Nissan does, I've never heard it called that till now.
Nissan had an idle air control valve, which featured an auxiliary air control solenoid as well as a fast idle control device. There was also a simple bi-metal valve called the air regulator which was open when the plenum was cold and closed when hot.

Idle air motor, idle air control valve, idle control module, whatever. At least it's not the dumb Bosch motor with a shutter wheel that the Audi uses :p

my 2011 corolla has canbus throughout, electric power steering, electric throttle control, rev hang for emissions control (which I fucking hate), and a whole bunch of other modern stuff in it. Even uses the ABS wheel sensors for the speedometer/odometer/whatever, sending that shit over CAN from the ABS module to the instrument cluster.

It's just all packaged in a boring ass car with steel wheels, hubcaps, gray outside and beige inside that screams "meh" not "technological showcase"

Heads for cylinder bore and hone next week. Then it gets new pistons, rods, and the crank gets balanced for them.

Also added an idle-up solenoid that just opens when the AC compressor is running.
