Yeah don't drive tired. Did that once, wrote off my car, broke 3 out of 4 limbs. Wouldn't recommend.

I was also killing myself working 70-80 hour weeks at the time. Don't do that either.

After talking to my body guy, I'm going to start with 3M 05888 patches for the back side of the bumper, then go with 05895 flexible plastic filler, followed by primer, base, pearl, and clear.

It's going to take a minute, so I'm pulling my spare bumper beam out of the attic, and putting that on the car, as soon as I get my eBay headlight in the mail.

It's hot out, so I should probably take it off sooner rather than later, as the gobbets of flesh won't age well.

I measured the runout on the GTO's bell housing, it's right on the margin of warranty coverage for the 5 speed (total runout is < 0.011", but > 0.010", according to a calibrated Mitutoyo dial indicator), so I reckon I'll use a set of 0.007" offset dowel pins to bring it below the threshold (0.010").

Was gonna mention @gee 's fiberglass solution. It works. It's sturdy. It's not flexible but that only matters if you keep running into stuff.

Don't know the chemical name for it but in my body shop job a long time ago we mixed a "flex agent" into the paint for bumper covers and other trim like that. Can take a little push in and rebound without cracking.
Not sure if that's still a thing or is just pre-mixed in with automotive paints now.

How to install a car stereo:

- Buy a dash kit, harness kit and the stereo with the features you want from Crutchfield.
- Get some heatshrink and solder, or heat shrink crimp terminals, and join the dash harness with the one that plugs into the new stereo. Match up the colors 1:1, it's pretty easy.
- Follow the Crutchfield instructions for taking out the factory stereo and putting on the new one.
- Crack a beer.

Edit: oh you're modding the stock stereo firmware? Never mind

Go to the junkyard and pull a stereo from a 2002 Buick. They play tapes AND cd's. :)

Miatas are fun cars, Argumentor. Congrats on that one.

Don't know about your firmware thing, I'd just go aftermarket as an independent unit. Looking at backup camera/gps add-ons like that for the Buick. For my better half of course. Seems much easiersimpler than trying to re-engineer what's already there. They all come with built in wifi, no wires to run to the camera, etc. Wiring for the rest is already there. Camera built in a license plate frame. Pairs with all the smartphones to play music, video, etc.

Wait a minute, your Miata is a 2018? Why does it not work with normal stuff, or could be made to with simply downloading an update?

That makes no sense.

My folks Explorer is I think a 2017 and they had like an hour long instruction class (older folks) on how to pair it with their phones and make all the gizmos work, including voice-activation, and updating the whole thing for new phones. My 77 year old Mom is a whiz at it and the thing was designed to be updated for future technology, like newer phones, etc.

The Miata didn't get it till 2020 from the factory. There is a retrofit kit, which I'm looking at picking up.

It will bluetooth to my phone and play from that, but I like Waze better than the Mazda Nav system and that's pretty much my main reason for doing this.

Fuck me. I've got to remove a quarter of the dash for this bullshit
To do what, exactly?

Why don't you guys just enjoy shit for what it is and roll with that?

We got a guy here that just bought a 2018 mazda and is already pulling the dash out.

Another one got something built in 1968 and farts around giving it fuel injection and a 5-speed.

They worked fine like they were made, you know. You're supposed to adjust your lifestyle to them not the other way around.

I don't try to make my 98 Ford play music off my phone. Didn't try to make my 56 GMC have power steering, or power brakes, or wishbone suspension either. It still had leaf springs and drums on the front, and it worked fine if you worked with it instead of against it.

Sometimes I think you guys like to pound your head against the wall just for fun
