This thread is about cool programs and applications. They can be open-source/free or purchase/licensed, and there is no criteria for listing them other than them being neat in some way.
DVD Shrink (Free) - By now I hope that everyone has heard of this app, but you can't have a cool program discussion without it being named. DVD Shrink allows you to rip, cut, and compress DVDs easily and (relatively) quickly. It's absolutely free and is still far better than most licensed programs in its class.
AnyDVD (license required) - These days I consider AnyDVD almost a "sister" program of DVD Shrink. AnyDVD actively strips the encryption/region coding from most commercial DVDs and allows them to be either ripped complete to the hard drive or it will allow DVD Shrink to run them if it was not able to in the first place.
Scott's Wallpaper Switcher (Free) - Simple program that changes your desktop wallpaper with multiple images that you designate. You can set it to switch at any interval (in minutes) that you like. It's pretty straight forward of course but if you get bored with your desktop wallpaper as often as I do it's kind of nifty.
Bitpim (Free) - Another small app that connects with most cell phones through their USB data cable and allows you to move ringtones, MP3s, pics, videos, and so on without any proprietary intervention, blocking,, or stupidity.
Audacity (Free) - A pretty robust audio editing tool. Not as full-featured as some of its licensed competitors, but for the price it's a great alternative.
