Well, does the old drive still work at all? In the BIOS when the computer first starts up, can you even see the name of the drive on the screen? If you can, you can try Spinrite here

Basically it scans and tries to clean all of the sectors on the drive. After running that and it is a bit workable afterward, immediately turn the system off, rip the drive out, put it in an enclosure, and get a new drive. Reinstall Windows (or whatever) on that new drive and plug in your new external drive. Copy/paste for days. Done.
 
I would go with SSD, though, for future if you are moving around a lot. No moving parts = better shock protection.
 
get one of the tampa crew to take the drive out and slave it to another comp
there are a number of tricks for getting dead drives to still work for a marginal amount of time to get your shit off...easy shit like laying it on it's side to throwing it in the freezer...one of them should be able to help
