I just received an email from the folks at FairTax.org encouraging me to submit a statement to the House Ways and Means committee in support of HR 25, the Fair Tax Act, to be published on the public record.

I thought I'd post the email here since any of you who are American citizens can use the steps described therein to send the committee a public record statement on ANY tax reform that you support, and being politically proactive is what makes this country work. So speak up.

National Call to Action
Grassroots advocates can submit statements for the record!

A subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee, the congressional body responsible for the income tax code, is holding a hearing on September 26th to let House Members describe tax proposals they favor.

The Ways and Means Committee is also accepting written statements from the public that will appear in the official public record. Like our tax forms, the process for submitting statements has been made complicated but please endure the two-step process described below to support the FairTax.

FairTax.org is asking every FairTax supporter to e-mail a short statement of support for HR 25 and the FairTax to the House Ways and Means Committee for inclusion in the public record. Please submit statements before October 10th.

FairTax supporters are asked to make brief written statements describing one or two favorite reasons for passage of the FairTax.

Please be respectful and mindful that others will judge both the strength of our support and the character of our campaign by the nature of these comments.

Sample: A written statement might be as brief as, “I support fundamental reform of the tax system by passing HR 25. A national retail sales tax to replace the income tax system will greatly improve the nation’s economy, help to increase the national savings rate and bring simplicity and fairness to the federal tax system.” This is just a sample statement. You decide the best one or two arguments that you most favor for passage of the FairTax and trust that your fellow citizens will cover other important points.

To submit a statement to the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures click on this link:

http://waysandmeans.house.gov/submissions.aspx.

After completing this form an e-mail will be sent to you within 24 hours soliciting your statement. This follow-on e-mail is your “doorway” to the subcommittee record. Be sure to identify yourself in both the form and the statement as a “FairTax supporter.”

Thank you for helping write American history and for all that you do to win enactment of HR 25.

It's unfair because it makes people try to comprehend what life in America would be like without the IRS and that causes headaches. And it's scary.

I've talked about it with an economist I work with. He feels it wouldn't work for various reasons but I still think it's the most fair form of taxation. It would, however, require a serious decline in government spending and cutting off some of the disgusting government bloat. The Fair Tax would only work if we got enough of the socialist politicians out of office and stopped making us pay for people that don't work for themselves.

Oh yeah, on section 3, it asks to select the hearing/written comments for ... and there's a drop down menu. I can't read everything it says in the menu, just the dates 9/26/06 and 10/31/06. I assume we want 9/26, correct?

I selected 9/26 because the comments we're submitting are related to that particular hearing, namely the advocation of whatever tax reform you happen to support. The 10/31 date deals with HR 6264, which is a separate issue.

crap, I'll redo it

As though the system we have works well?

Not well but he feels the Fair Tax system wouldn't work well for our economy. I'm not big on economics to begin with so I don't really understand the reasons.

At the end of the day, however, I'm a fan of keeping my money until I decide that Uncle Sam should get a cut of it.

Actually, it would mean more federal interference... I can imagine here in NY: 23% federal sales tax + 8% state sales tax + 3.5% county retail tax = like 33 cents on the dollar.

Personally I prefer that rather than having to pay imbedded taxes that hidden in everything. Plus it taxes tourists and illegals and encourages people to save/invest which will also help the economy. IMHO I think the good outweighs the bad with the FairTax.
