theres something "clanky" about flats so i prefer the half flats or the duller rounds like the DR

Was playing the Crackercaster 5 for a while just now. My one beef is it's too damn bright! Totally passive, no preamp. My educated guess is the tone pot is 500K.
@HipHugHer do you think a 250k pot would bring the zing down? I can barely keep the tone pot at 2.

Maybe only very slightly. Likely not the problem. Adi is on it with the tone cap. Even if it is the standard .047, bumping it up a size or two would get more usable range of motion in the tone knob. If it's that bright, a .056 or .068 should get more wiggle room in the knob instead of just off and barely cracked open.

Use cotton in your ears. That'll dull the tone.

Reminds me a little bit of my 75 jazz bass, bound and blocked maple on Maple. Brightest bass I ever owned hands down. Hurt my ears. Dogs would howl miles away when I cranked the tone knob. Loved the neck, hated the electronics.
