For those that haven't heard (but actually give a hoot), Perpetual Entertainment has been developing an MMO under the Star Trek license for about a year now. It's scheduled for beta later this year with, I believe, a 2008 release. For decades Paramount's most well-known franchise has been dragged through the mud by various game developers. Of the dozens of titles released under the Star Trek name less than a handful have been remotely successful, few of those even qualifying as AAA titles and fewer still actually recouping the development costs. Perpetual is taking the reigns and creating an MMORPG that will hopefully revive the franchise.

More general information about the game available here.

Also, a few interviews for your viewing pleasure: http://www.startrekonline.com/news/

Yesterday nearly 100 people from various game magazines and other publications visited Perpetual's offices to dicuss both STO and their other game, Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising. My inside source tells me that Perpetual had a number of fresh goodie to show off including these high quality promotional stills.

Though I never liked the theory of scanning brainwaves. I prefer to think that most warp-capable species developed similar techonlogies and all their UTs do a type of 'handshake' where they transmit and recieve each others dictionary and grammatical databases and everything else is handles by the mathematics of linguistics. :o

Universal translator that is embedded in everyone's head. That's one of those devices they had to use in order to move the show along. Same with the tricorder, how all of the plots were solved using the tricorder.

As for the game, yay another MMO I'll get sucked into. :(

It doesnt change the fact the Federation are communists. Vive la Révolution!

and teh Borg are capitalists

actually the borg are the true communists. the klingons were used as metaphors for the ruskies but they were more capitalist than the federation. the romulans represented the chinese while the cardassians are like the durka durkas of the galaxy

Mmm, but in contrast to the totalitarian but generally free to do what you please as long as you have the money Empire?

It's like Russia vs. Sweden.

the klingons? maybe I'm wrong but I think they're pretty much a feudal society where if you do have the money you can do whatever you want until another house decides you're encroaching on their shiznit

UFP = Sweden?

I think the galactic politics of Star Trek could be far more interesting than those of Star Wars but they never took the effort to put it on screen. Articles of the Federation was the first book to really deal with it. :o Still I don't think I'd be very pleased living in a society like that, everything seems to be government owned and the federal authority of the UFP is grossly overextended. :mad:

There are actually long essays on this on the internet. Mostly cause I use to read everything related to Star Wars:

I'd place a higher value on freedom than security. kekeke
