Well, I'm picking up stakes and moving closer to work. For those of you that know the area that puts me close to the heart of scenic downtown Frederick. The problem I currently face is that for the last 10 years or so I have used a small, local bank. So small that the closest branch to my new residence will be roughly 25 miles away.

So on to the reason for the post, the questions at hand. First, if you do business with a national (or multinational) bank what are the reasons you are with them. Second, are there any national (or multi) banks that you would never do business with again?

HSBC, because I needed an account/atm that worked overseas. Free checking roxors my boxors. They are everywhere on the east coast and in europe.

Also have a small local bank with a high interest savings. It's nearly impossible to move money into or out of though. Nothing is electronic with them.

I've had a Bank of America account since the dawn of time. Their online banking is free, their phone slaves are surprisingly useful and effective, and the one time someone tried to use one of my accounts fraudulently they caught it before I did.

Edit: Sadly I'm over three-hundred miles from the nearest branch, but between direct deposit and online banking is almost a non-issue.

We use a local Credit Union. It works pretty well, but its only local. Weve been considering opening a small savings account in some nationally operated bank for emergency purposes.

have a checking and savings account with dollar bank, local to ohio and pa. it's free and i've had them forever. most of my retirement and investing is done with key bank. and i have a checking and savings account with chase, mostly cause i work for them. i do some investing with chase also.

I use BB&T, they are OK for the most part. The only thing that bugs me is the fingerprint scanner to get into the safety deposit box room never works. Besides that they seem to be a moderate level of evil which is normal for banks these days.

I use a small community bank in the town I went to high school in... I live almost 30 miles from there now but thanks to direct deposit and ATM's it's not really an issue.

I'm also a BoA man, have been since days after I turned 18 (when it was still NationsBank). Overall they've been good though a few things still piss me off. Maybe I just got spoiled but I've noticed that they treat small business clients like absolute royalty but when I closed that account and only kept my personal checking I was lower than the crud they pick out from behind their ears.

In Atlanta and St Pete you couldn't swing a cat without hitting a BoA branch (believe me, I tried) but when I moved up here the branches were few and far between. The nearest ATM was twelve miles away in a grocery store and was typically broken. Over time they've really exploded here and now there are three branches on my way home from work in addition to an ATM within jogging distance.

I had a BankOne (now CharterOne) account for a while because they're pretty prevalent in the area but a clusterfuck with Paypal ruined that forever.

I'll be keeping BoA, they've done well recently. Their phone monkeys are indeed useful and I've gotten half a dozen overdraft fees reversed by simply laying on the southern drawl and buttering up the girl on the phone.

wasnt bankone bought by jpmorgan :thrawn:

Roger that, thanks for the input all. My own personal history with BoA prevents me from listing them as an option. Course my personal history with BoA prevents me from going into at least two branches without being escorted out by the police. I mean seriously, a freaking dollar for a deposit slip and they don't expect someone to go postal? Anyhoo, my stepfather used to work for BoA. Actually it was Nationwide. Actually it was NCNB. Actually he went all the way down the chain (sovran, suburban and ultimately starting with dominion). When he was an employee we had great service from BoA. Once they downsized him and replaced him with a trained monkey we got the turbo shaft.

I'm now officially down to three choices. M&T, BB&T and my company's credit union.

M&T is slightly in the lead with free checking (with direct deposit), free online banking and a sh*teload of ATMs in the area.
