Sad story about pediophiles and how they are trying to identify a girl that so far has alluded them.

The fark link had the following text:
Police consider releasing victim's picture in hopes of catching child pornographer. Article also notes that all but one of the offenders captured in the last four years have been a die-hard Star Trek fan

I thought the last line was one of their jokes. Then I read the article

On one wall is a "Star Trek" poster with investigators' faces substituted for the Starship Enterprise crew. But even that alludes to a dark fact of their work: All but one of the offenders they have arrested in the last four years was a hard-core Trekkie.

Det. Constable Warren Bulmer slips on a Klingon sash and shield they confiscated in a recent raid. "It has something to do with a fantasy world where mutants and monsters have power and where the usual rules don't apply," Bulmer reflects. "But beyond that, I can't really explain it."

Krawczyk sometimes sneaks a look at a framed quote from Nietzsche above his computer: "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster."

A lot of guys and girls who do this work have this quote somewhere in their office. We had one, too.

Makes sense. Did you ever track someone down and "accidently" castrate them with your swiss army knife

No, unfortunately. The agents are the ones who do the tracking and arresting and accidental beating up. (Actually you'd maybe be surprised at how civil agents and cops are who do this stuff, what with the lawsuits and everything. They're even polite, more or less.)

The US Attorney does the prosecution of the crimes, to make sure the freaks are locked up for as long as possible. Which is actually the hard job, but it means we spend all day in an office somewhere staring at evidence, reading case law, etc. If you screw up, even nominally, the guy could walk. (And rape.) But once in court the prosecutors crucify those guys.

Its funny. If I were a judge and a convicted pediophile filed a lawsuit against someone for beating the crap out of him I would laugh in his face and tell him to enjoy some hairy prison cock.

You would at the end of the day, maybe at home or at a bar with colleagues somewhere. But not on the bench. Unless you hate being a judge, in which case being removed wouldn't bother you. Any job that requires you to be a purely objective interpreter of law at all times and leave your personal opinions in your head is extremely hard in those situations, to say the least. I'd rather be the guy with the gun, in the trenches, where "unfortunate altercations sometimes happen during the confusion and chaos that can preclude an arrest."
