WTF So I just dick'd my butt

Actually someone moving from production/R&D/whatever to sales has the opportunity to be really bad

I worked a few 80 hour weeks at my old job because an engineer-turned-salesman sold something we didn't make.

@CletusJones ESPECIALLY don't be like that.
"Hey guys, I sold that thing you were talking about maybe someday developing! We need it next week , btw!

In this case it was a new radio transmitter. We had the 2nd prototype done and largely working, and we showed it off at a trade show and were pretty proud of it. But it really wasn't ready for production, we still had to do more design changes and finish software and run through a proper validation plan and get production assembly/test stuff done up and all that.

Like having to ask yourself "do we order 5 PCBs and verify that it works, or do we just chance that we got everything right and order 50?"... turns out we don't have the time in the schedule to do 2 orders, and next weeks later it's 8PM at night and I'm doing trace cuts and magnet wire on 50 boards because I confused SCK and SCLK on a schematic I was doing at probably 10PM at night.

Right at the tail end of that project is when I fell asleep and wrote off car #1.

And sales is king because they bring in profits? You can't push back on schedule?

For sure. That's always been my biggest gripe with sales as a tech support guy. Fuckin salesman told them it would give them a reach around and big surprise it doesn't. Now everyone is pissed. I want to sell stuff next year, not have doors slammed in my face for being a fucktard

I don't get this place.

I have FOUR projects they want me to knock something out on by C.O.B. today, and I damned sure ain't staying late.

And we just listened to Tony "Banana Hands" talk about Skinner conditioning for 40 minutes under the guise of "pain vs pleasure"

Supposedly I'm one of the highest paid person in the company... and yet they just burnt up about an hour's worth of my time.

The fuck?

So sales has been pretty weird. Met a bunch of cool people as well as a bunch of chodes. Been asked to leave a few times by angry secretaries and was even told "we don't do anything here" over the noise of a shop full of equipment and guys working to make things.

Definitely a different experience than anything else I've done. I don't understand why some people blanket hate sales people. Like I'm courteous and they immediately meet me with anger after I say hi.

Cuz the shitty ones ruin it for you
This. Seriously.

So SO many of em come in solely looking for a sale. I can count on one hand how many times I've had a salesman go "I don't think our product will be a good fit for you. Let me get you someone else's info." And of those times every single one has been because we don't meet the threshold of sales they would need to make a commission

yeah I get that, there are tons of salespeople who are just in it for the dollars. I told a guy last week that the stuff he wanted to buy wasn't right for his operations and he was really thankful. It sucks I can't help him make his product but it is what it is. He still invited me to come check out operations and talked about hunting with me.

Cold calling has been pretty wild too. Got some requests for machines already, if they buy that would be fantastic. I think I quoted about $5M worth of gear, if they hook up it'll be like 4-5 months before I get paid though.
