Most of them have their own oddities sure. There's no such thing as normal anyways.

Here in the US they can actually hold you indefinitely even if you don't want to. You have to go before a judge within 72 hours though, and then every 6 months thereafter unless some formal court document is drawn up after the first 6 months. The judge usually sides with the mental facility, so it really just seems like a formality. It's scary but at the same time the rules are there for a reason.
At least here in Florida, a person can "Baker Act" another person for up to 72 hours if they may be a harm to themselves or others; and if they are an adult they can sign themselves out of the clinic after that.
