SATA Question...

...Is it currently in the specs or in the near future will there be a spec where power to an SATA drive will be provided by the SATA cable itself?
 
Then the power would be derived from the motherboard itself.
The last thing motherboard manufacturers want is having to deal with hdd power.

What does PATA have to do with anything?

One of the guys here in the office swore up and down that he replaced a drive in a dell that was powered off the SATA bus. Maybe thats why it didn't work to begin with.

PATA has as much to do with power as SATA does.
 
You know, instead of having to endure taunts and ridicule, you could go to http://www.serialata.org/index.asp and read the spec for yourself.

The answer is no, there is no power sent over the SATA bus. The power connection has been remodelled for SATA and there is support for hot swapping drives. This is probably where your co-worker got confused.

Also your drive will show up in the system tray as a removable drive unless you hide the icon.
