I saw an episode of Modern Marvels once that had a segment on the ship factory that existed solely (hehe) to fish and manufacture McDonalds fish for the Filet O Fish sandwich. It was fascinating. The entire ship was a factory and frozen storage.

Pretty much every trawler/longliner is a factory boat these days. They arrive on shore and drop off frozen packaged fish.

Makes for better quality fish to process it right away, but the real reason is labor cost/labor regulations/taxation. Costs way more to get stuff processed in an on-shore fish plant in a first world country where they have to pay a first world worker wage.

Newfoundland's main industry used to be fishing AND fish processing, the factory trawler both decimated the atlantic cod population, and killed off the fish plants scattered around the island.

first the Taco Bell Cuisine and now FISH STICKS for fish and chips?!

i caaaant with you pale people
Don't be so quick to elevate comfort food (that you can't eat anyway) to epicurean standards that it doesn't need to get to in order to be decent.

Fish and chips is fine, even if you're doing it with cheap frozen battered cod, and taco bell is fine if you're hungry and don't mind shitting your pants later.

Those people run ads on craigslist in the jobs. Basically "you will be on a boat, we won't go to shore for a month or more, you might work 12-16 hour days but will be paid OT".
