yes, the issue there is that in many (I would assume most) cities paramedics are employees of the city and rely on their unions for salary negotiation as well as the city maintaining a proper budget for their operations. so a fully justified increase in their pay still means either another public thing gets less money or taxes have to go up

in the case of the burger flippers the only thing at risk is the profit margins of the companies

It's just that it doesn't, nor ever will, work that way. There's just too much non-govt teamwork filling in the gap in your way. For example, a 16yr old works 40 hrs a week over the summer and saves his $ while his Ps pay for his food, clothing and shelter.

The level of hand wringing you do because it might not be as sunny a day somewhere is amusing.
