... backed up everything, hopefully, and went to reformat and reinstall. Repartitioned my drive to meet my current needs, and started the process. 88% through the format I hear "click click clunk"

dammit.

Uh, needs more info after clunk....

Edit: I've never heard a harddrive go "clunk" and I'm trying to imagine.

Well, it exploded, sending shrapnel throughout my office. Thankfully, my life was spared as a large jagged piece of metal intent on imbedding itself in my chest was deflected by my lifesize Jar Jar Binks plastic mannequin

That's awesome.
Take out hard drive, put in freezer for about 30-40 mintues.
Go get another drive. Install OS on that.
Back up old frozen drive to new one.
Do it.

Unless it's already dead.

everything was backed up that needed to be. So I got everything setup on my new drive that I pulled from an unused system. But my backup drive in my main system somehow became set as the C: drive. So I decided to transfer everything over to the new drive and reformat that drive, something I had been meaning to do anyway. So I reboot and reformat, reboot again and now the system does not see my windows partition.

3rd times the charm

I wonder if it's a WD drive...

Could be worse. I woke up yesterday morning to find my computer stuck at the boot screen saying NO SYSTEM DISC. My lovely WD 80GB drive had died during the night.

Oh, and I hadn't backed up in a month and lost a paper I'm working on. Fortunately, the data are backed up but the written part is all gone.

I've now lost 3 WD drives in the past couple years. I went out and got a Seagate and there's not a chance in hell I'm gonna get a WD again.

I don't back up my stuff now that I'm not in school anymore, but I probably should. But it would be devestating if I lost my porn.

The drive probably does not have a boot sector on it since it wasnt the primary drive. You will probably have to start all over again and make the drive bootable from fdisk or get another drive and make it bootable and assign it as the primary drive. Windows does not have to be on the primary drive but the primary drive does have to have a valid boot sector on it, and windows does have to know that windows is not starting from the primary drive. So put another drive in the computer assign it the primary drive make it bootable, then do a overlay installation to the existing windows directory on the other dirve.

What can I say....I have a few shall we say, idiosyncrasies, that are still following me around from my early days with computers. My first computer was a Sinclair ZX81 since it only had 16k of memory anything I wanted to do more than once needed to be on cassett tape back-up. Old habits die hard I guess.....:D :D :D :D

I used to love loading Dambuster on my TRS-80 via tape.
